The New Digital Format

The SAT is no longer a pencil-and-paper test. Recently, the SAT switched to a digital format. Students will take the test on an approved device at local schools. Students can use scrap paper, but all the test content is on their computer/tablet. The digital format gives the CollegeBoard the opportunity to make the test shorter and more accessible…

Adaptive Testing

The new digital SAT is an adaptive test. The SAT direct students to different questions based on their performance. The test is organized into four sections or modules. Here’s how the test flows…

Shorter Test & Quicker Scores

Because the adaptive model tailors questions to each tester, CollegeBoard is able to make the SAT shorter. The old test was over 3 hours long; the new digital test is 2 hours and 14 minutes. Also, because of the digital format, scores will be available in days not weeks, an exciting development for nervous testers.

The Verbal Sections: Short Passages

On the new digital SAT, the Verbal Sections is made up exclusively of short passages, each accompanied by a single question.

For some Verbal questions, students are tested on their comprehension of the passage; for others, students are tested on their writing and language skills.

The Math Sections: Familiar Content

The Math sections of the digital SAT test high school content that most Juniors have previously learned in school. Roughly 70% of the digital SAT Math questions tests Algebra I and Algebra II, and 30% tests Geometry, Trigonometry, and Data Analysis.

The Math sections contain a mix of multiple-choice and free-response questions, and students are allowed to use a calculator and scrap paper on both sections.

When can I take the digital SAT?

College Board offers SAT tests all throughout the year. You can register for a test at a local test site in March, May, June, August, October, November, or December (find upcoming test dates). We recommend testing for the first time at some point in your junior year. And remember, students have the option to test multiple times and can even “super score” multiple test scores.
