Test Prep & College Admissions

Should I write the SAT or ACT essay? Should I take SAT Subject tests?

In June of 2021, the CollegeBoard stopped offering the optional essay on the SAT. This is no great disappointment to most students! The ACT still technically offers the ACT essay, but we recommend against opting to write the essay when you register for the ACT. There are a small list of schools that require or suggest the ACT essay. Other schools won’t factor in that score, so it’s not worth the time or effort.

Also, the College Board has ended its Subject Test program. Previously known to parents as "Achievement Tests," these exams are no longer being administered in the United States. These changes come as little surprise, as the number of colleges requiring the essay and Subject Tests has dropped precipitously over the past several years. These changes shouldn’t change the way you approach your preparation. The SAT and ACT remain top factors on your college application, along with good grades and well-rounded extracurriculars.
